Obituary of Martin Eugene Layne

 Gruetli-Laager, Tennessee – Mr. Martin Eugene “Gene” Layne Sr., 90, passed away late Sunday December 2, 2018 at the Erlanger Sequatchie Emergency Room in Dunlap, Tennessee.  He was born in Tracy City, Tennessee on August 29, 1928 to Franklin Parks Layne Sr. and Dixie Lee Nunley Layne who preceded him in death.  He was also preceded by his brother, Franklin Parks Layne Jr.; grandson, Shane Kilgore; daughter-in-law, Sandy Layne.

He was a  cook with the rank of Corporal in the US Army and was owner of Layne’s Esso Service Station in Gruetli-Laager working until he retired. The building is now Fat Chunks and Daves Restaurant.  He was affiliated with the Palmer Church of God.

He is survived by his wife of 61 ½ years, Bonnie Finch Layne; daughter, Jeanne and her husband Leon Kilgore of Gruetli-Laager; sons, Martin E. Layne Jr. and his wife Wilma of Coalmont, Frankie Lee Layne of Gruetli-Laager and Stephen Mark Layne and his wife Chasmin of New Market, Alabama; sisters, Charlotte Meeks and Laura Bell Tate, both of Palmer; grandchildren, Joshua (Brandy) Kilgore, Rachel Layne, Karsyn and Addison Layne, Travis (Stephanie), Brandon and Tyler Layne; great grandson, Caleb Daniel Kilgore; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Ministers, Darrell Turner, Bill Smith and Kirk Baker officiating with burial to follow in the Palmer Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Sequatchie Valley Honor Guard.  Visitation: 3:00 PM – 9:00 PM Tuesday at Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, Tennessee. www.laynefuneralhome.com
