Obituary of Mona Griswold Moreland

Gruetli-Laager – Mrs. Mona Griswold Sweeton Moreland, 80, passed away, Monday, January 22, 2018, at the Sheltering Arms Home in Palmer after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born in Tracy City, TN, on December 10, 1937 to Carl P. Sweeton and Anna Griswold Sweeton. She attended Grundy County High School where she played on the girls’ basketball team, marched as a majorette, and graduated with the class of 1955.

Besides spending her childhood in Tracy City, TN she also lived in Columbus, OH; Sewanee, TN; Jacksonville, FL; and Martinsburg, WV before residing in Duncan, OK with her husband Karl, where she was an excellent homemaker, gardener, quilter, and amateur genealogist. She was an active member of the Douglas Senior Citizen Center in Duncan and belonged to the Grundy County Historical Society for whom she served as the editor of The Pathfinder, the journal of that organization.

She was preceded in death by her father and step-mother, Carl P. and Winona Sweeton; mother and step-father, Anna and Douglas Goforth; daughter, Anna Evelyn Moore; brother, Carl David Sweeton; nephew, David Edwin Sweeton; Ex-husband and father of her children, Thomas Moore, Sr.

She was of the Episcopal faith.

She is survived by her husband, Karl Phillip Moreland, Duncan, OK; son, Thomas Moore Jr., Gruetli-Laager, TN; daughters, Mona Moore (John) Brittingham, Nashville, TN and Claire Moore (Todd) Proudfoot, Jacksonville, FL; stepchildren, Krista and Mark Allen Hoffman;  grandchildren, Olivia Cowart, Jacksonville, FL, Emily Anne (Michael) Hart, Tallahassee, FL, Lt. Stuart Douglas, USN, Norfolk, VA, Cdr. John (Deseree) Brittingham, USNR, Atlanta, GA and Sarah (Scott) Muir, Durham, NC; half sisters, Nancy (Wade) Daugherty and Katie Goforth; half brother, Ronnie Sweeton; sister-in-law, Linda Sweeton; nieces, Jenny Reid, Cathy Rangeo, Lee Ann Backlund, Vickie Shuford and Beth Perkins.

Her family would like to express sincere gratitude to Jamie Roberts, his family, the staff, and Dr. John C. Mckeown for providing Mona with excellent care at the Sheltering Arms Home, and also to Donna Pitti and her family in Duncan, OK.

A memorial graveside service will be held at Tracy City Cemetery, Tracy City, Tennessee, on Saturday, January 27, 2018, at 10:00 a.m.
